Analytical Methods for OrganotinsHistorically, analytical methods for organotins have primarily focused on butyltins (especially tributyltin). However, ORTEPA chemists have worked to develop and validate methods based on in-house knowledge, scientific literature, and German standard methods from Deutsches Institut fr Normung e.V. (DIN). The analytical methods posted below are applicable to organotin compounds containing various alkyl groups (i.e., methyl, butyl, or octyl) and degrees of substitution (i.e., mono-, di-, or tri-), and have been developed for several matrices (e.g., water, dry animal feed, and air filters). In most cases, these methods are capable of determining concentrations of either individual organotins or mixtures of multiple compounds. They incorporate a single extraction/derivatization step using an organic solvent and an alkylating agent, and analyses may be conducted by gas chromatography with flame photometric (GC-FPD), mass spectrometry (GC-MS), or atomic emission (GC-AED) detection. Additionally, a "total tin" method using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is also provided. Each of the methods posted below are available as downloadable *.pdf format documents.
