MarketsOrganotin compounds are excellent heat stabilizers and are used world wide in almost all PVC processing techniques: calendering, rigid and flexible extrusion for indoor and outdoor use, blow molding and injection molding. The nature of the alkyl group R (methyl, butyl, octyl, dodecyl) and the ligand X attached to the tin atom makes it possible to obtain different performance levels. Specific requirements such as transparency and outdoor weatherability are achievable by changing the nature of the anionic ligand. The use of tin in PVC heat stabilizers represents about 3.5 percent of the global production of tin. The European consumption of organotin PVC stabilizers in 1995 was approximately 15.000 metric tons, accounting for 6 - 8 percent of the total use of stabilizers for PVC. A typical application level for organotin stabilizers is up to 2 percent of the plastic weight.
